Thank you for contacting Governor Pence regarding your thoughts on Indiana's academic standards. The governor believes that education is a state and local function, and that decisions about our schools should be made closest tot he parents and the communities that depend up upon them. As the first state to withdraw from Common Core, Indiana had a unique responsibility to create new, high standards in an open and serious process that would serve our Children and strengthen our schools. While the standards are established at the state level, school curriculum, textbooks and classroom materials are determined by local school officials. I encourage you to contact your local school officials to discuss specific school materials. Indiana's new standards were developed by Hoosier teachers, who were recommended by their school corporations from across the state, and who brought a wealth of classroom experience to the evaluation process. These educators, as well as experts from Indiana's institutions of higher learning, reviewed multiple sets of existing standards through a blind selection process (not identifying the origins) and provided recommendations on the educational skills Hoosier students must master at each grade level. The Governor believes that Indiana's new academic standards, where were written by Hoosiers for Hoosiers and included more than 2000 comments received by the state board of education and department of education are uncommonly high.
Indiana's new academic standards were crafted through an unprecedented open, transparent process that engaged more that 150 educators and academics who contributed more than 6000 hours toward their development. Governor pence is grateful for the efforts of hundreds of classroom teachers and thousands of citizens who contributed in the development of the new standards.
